ADVOCATES
SPEECHTEXTACCESS, LLC JOB TRAINING IN CAPTIONING
Bill Graham founded SpeechText Access (STA) to train people with disabilities as realtime captioners and find them jobs. SpeechText Access seek the first few students, who identify themselves as disabled veterans and will train them at no charge. The primary skills needed are a clear voice, excellent hearing, good literacy, and broad general knowledge. Besides making good money, you’ll get the satisfaction of providing communication access for many appreciative deaf and hard-of-hearing people.

EDUCATORS
TEACHER INCENTIVE GRANTS
The Ohio Art Education Foundation invites applications for the Teacher Incentive Program. OAEF is an independent organization that provides support for a variety of art education programs. Foundation grants are made to OAEA members only and must be used for projects that enhance and further art education in the State of Ohio. LEADERSHIP FOR ARTS EDUCATION: The Arts Education Partnership (AEP) recently published a guide entitled "What School Leaders Can Do to Increase Arts Education." The guide is directed at school principals who often decide the level of arts present within a school.
GUIDE FOCUSES ON ENGAGING STUDENTS: The National Guild for Community Arts Education recently released a guide entitled "Engaging Adolescents; Building Youth Participation in the Arts" by Ellen Hirszy as part of their Engaging Adolescents Initiative (EAI).
GRANTS FOR ARTS EDUCATION AVAILABLE: The P. Buckley Moss Foundation for Children's Education supports teachers who wish to establish an effective learning tool using the arts in teaching children with learning disabilities and other special needs.
BLOG PROVIDES STEPS TO INTEGRATE THE ARTS: The Edutopia Blog by Mariko Nobori (Schools that Work: Integrating Art and Politics to Improve High School Student Engagement, June 22, 2011) describes a collaboration between AP Government teacher Dayna Laur and art teacher Katlyn Wolfgang at Central York High School, York Pennsylvania.
LITERARY OPPORTUNITIES
ONLINE REGISTRATION OPENS FOR OHIO’S POETRY OUT LOUD
For the seventh year in a row, the Ohio Arts Council is sponsoring Poetry Out Loud (POL) with national support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, and with local assistance from the Ohioana Library Association and Thurber House. Teachers may register online now for the 2011-12 season of POL. As the program enters its seventh year, Ohio’s POL maintains the promise of influencing high school students across the state. Student participants enhance their public speaking skills, cultivate self-confidence and discover the joys of memorizing and reciting classic and contemporary poetry.
Ohio’s POL state finals take place on Saturday, March 24, 2012, at Ohio Dominican University’s Matesich Theatre. POL school champions compete for cash prizes and an all-expense-paid trip to participate in the National Finals in Washington, D.C., on May 15, 2012. Ohio high school teachers are encouraged to sign up for this exciting celebration of our literary heritage. POL teacher toolkits and other materials are available upon request. EVOLUTION THEATER BICENTENNIAL PLAYWRIGHTS FESTIVAL
Deadline: January 28, 2012
In celebration of Columbus’ Bicentennial, the Evolution Theatre Company will host the Bicentennial Playwrights Festival that will feature plays by local writers. Playwrights must live in, be from, or attend school in the Greater Columbus area and may submit up to three scripts. All plays, whether comedies, dramas, or musical must be about or set in Columbus and no more than fifteen minutes in length. Six winning plays will be chosen to show at the Festival and winners will receive a full production and a $100 prize. For further information, call or text Evolution Theatre at 614-223-1124.
PERFORMING ARTISTS
DRAMAKINTICS MOVEMENT CLASSES, Cincinnati, ongoing enrollment
Among other programs, Dramakinetics offers hour-long intensive classes in drama, music, and movement to engage individuals of all abilities to reach their full creative potential while experiencing, creating, and performing art. Goals are to foster independence, social skills, and empowerment. Ongoing enrollment is available for age-appropriate classes (from age 3 to 18+). DANCING WHEELS SUMMER DANCE AND THEATRE WORKSHOPS
The School of Dancing Wheels offers fun and intensive summer workshops in dance and theatre geared for children and adults of all abilities and skill levels. Partial tuition scholarships are available based upon need.

CALL FOR ENTRY: EMBRACING OUR DIFFERENCES

The mission of Embracing Our Differences® is to use art as a catalyst for creating awareness and promoting, throughout our community, the value of diversity, the benefits of inclusion and the significance of the active rejection of hatred and prejudice. Embracing Our Differences® 2012, the 9th annual outdoor art exhibit, will contain 39 billboard-sized original works of art measuring 16 feet wide by 12.5 feet high (4.8768 m wide by 3.8100 m high). Each selection is accompanied by an inspirational quote. The exhibit will be displayed during April & May, 2012 at Island Park along Sarasota, Florida’s beautiful bay front. Since 2004, Embracing Our Differences® has been viewed by more than one million visitors. During the same period, 85,000 students and teachers attended the exhibit – free of charge thanks to our School Bus Program – for a firsthand observation and discussion concerning the importance of diversity in our lives.
COLUMBUS ARTS FESTIVAL EMERGING ARTISTS APPLICATION

The Emerging Artist program is designed specifically for artists who have extremely limited or no experience exhibiting and selling their artwork at outdoor venues. Artists who apply in this category must be residents of Franklin or surrounding counties in Ohio which include Union, Delaware, Licking, Fairfield, Pickaway, Fayette and Madison. Be a part of one of the nation's to fine arts and craft festivals. Applications for local, national and international artists, as well as local emerging artists who are new to exhibiting at arts festivals can apply starting today!
CALL FOR ENTRY: WESTERVILLE PUBLIC SCULPTURE PROJECT
Deadline: January 20, 2012
Sponsored by the City of Westerville Parks and Recreation Department, Westerville Parks Foundation and the Arts Council of Westerville, Inc. The 2012 – 2013 exhibition will feature 7 – 10 sculptures by Ohio artists. Sculptures will be juried into the exhibit and installed outdoors, on concrete pads in high profile locations in historic uptown Westerville, Ohio and throughout City Parks and business areas. All work must be for sale and remain in the exhibit for the entire duration. Each artist will receive a $500 stipend. In addition to the stipend, a grand prize of $500 will be awarded.

Join us for Art & Soul 2012, a regional art exhibit designed to promote and display the works of artists with developmental disabilities! This event welcomes artists from Adams, Auglaize, Brown, Butler, Champaign, Clark, Clermont, Clinton, Darke, Fayette, Greene, Hamilton, Highland, Logan, Madison, Mercer, Miami, Montgomery, Preble, Shelby, Union, and Warren Counties to submit works such as paintings, drawings, 3-D art, photography, and mixed media. The top 40 entries will be selected by an independent panel of judges for display. THE AMERICAN CENTER FOR ARTISTS
The American Center for Artists is an electronic magazine that focuses on the biography and autobiography of famous and emerging writers, painters, sculptors, musicians, and other artists. It also presents new and reprinted works by these artists as well as articles about them.
